You probably built and checked your site on a computer. Big screen, real keyboard, fast wifi, a mouse that can hit a target the size of a grain of rice. Your customer is on a phone. One thumb, a glass keyboard, two bars of signal in a parking lot, and a kid pulling on their sleeve.
That gap explains most mobile checkout losses. For a typical small business, well over half of visits now come from phones, and it is commonly cited that mobile conversion rates run noticeably lower than desktop. Some of that is browsing behavior. A lot of it is checkouts that were never once tested on the device where the buying actually happens.
The fix is rarely a redesign. Your website is plumbing for money, and on mobile the water is usually making it all the way to the last stretch of pipe, then leaking out at a few specific joints. The rest of this page walks through those joints one at a time.
On a computer, a badly built form is annoying. On a phone, it is a wall. Three things do most of the damage.
Account-before-purchase walls are a whole leak of their own, but know this much: inventing a password and retyping it on a phone screen is where a lot of first orders die. Offer guest checkout.
A tap target is the area of the screen that responds to a touch. Commonly cited guidance from Apple and Google puts the minimum at roughly 44 to 48 pixels square, about the pad of a fingertip. Plenty of small business checkouts have targets half that size.
The usual offenders: tiny plus and minus quantity steppers, a remove-item link a millimeter from the checkout button, cramped dropdown menus for state or country, and popup close buttons tucked into a corner. When a thumb misses, the phone does something the customer did not ask for. Wrong page. Item deleted. Popup reopened. People forgive one mis-tap. By the third, they decide your site is broken and leave.
Also check what sits on top of your buttons. A chat bubble floating over the pay button, a cookie banner pinned to the bottom of the screen, or the keyboard itself covering the one button that matters will quietly end checkouts all day long.
The payment page is usually the heaviest page in the whole flow. It loads your payment provider's secure frame, fraud checks, and often a pile of third-party scripts that hitched a ride over the years. On office wifi it feels fine. On one bar of cell signal, it hangs. This is the last joint in the pipe, right before the money, and it is where the pressure is highest.
A hang here reads differently than a hang anywhere else. A slow product page is just slow. A slow payment page looks broken, or worse, sketchy. The customer just typed in a card number and got a spinner. Many will not tap pay a second time because they are afraid of being charged twice. Closing the tab feels safer than waiting, so that is what they do.
Three cheap improvements: test your checkout on cell data instead of wifi, ask whoever built your site to strip old tracking scripts you no longer use, and make sure the payment page still looks like your business. A sudden jump to a plain white page with no logo makes careful buyers hesitate at the worst possible moment.
