My Website Gets Visitors but No Phone Calls. What Is Wrong?

Class Company US · Updated August 28, 2026
Almost always, the problem is the call path, not your business. On most service sites that get traffic but no calls, the phone number is buried, not tappable on a phone, or sitting next to nothing that makes a stranger trust it. Put your number in live text at the top of every page, make it a tap-to-call link, and show hours and one proof point beside it. That fixes it for most sites.

Where should my phone number be on my website?

At the top of every page, in plain text, before anyone scrolls. Not just on the contact page. Your website is plumbing for money: visitors flow in from Google, and the phone call is where money comes out. Every extra tap between landing and calling is a kink in that pipe.

Most service sites hide the number in one of three places: a contact page nobody visits, a footer nobody reaches, or a logo image that looks like a number but is really a picture. Nobody hunts for a phone number. The next company is one thumb-move away.

The test: can a first-time visitor start a call within two taps of landing on any page of your site? If not, this is your first fix.

Why can't people tap my number on their phone?

Usually because the number is plain text with no link behind it, or worse, part of an image. On a phone, a number should be a tap-to-call link. Tap it and the dialer opens with your number already filled in. Without that link, a visitor has to memorize or copy ten digits, switch apps, and type them in. Some will do it. Most will not, at 10pm, with a water heater leaking.

The fix is one line of code, something web folks call a tel link. If someone else built your site, this is a five-minute request. Every site builder, from WordPress to Wix to Squarespace, supports it.

Two things quietly break tap-to-call. Numbers pasted in as images: nothing to tap. And menus or PDFs where the number appears but was never linked. So test it. Open your site on your own phone and tap your number. If the dialer does not open, you have found your problem.

Why would someone find my number and still not call?

Because calling a stranger takes a small act of trust, and most sites give the number zero support. Before dialing, a first-time visitor quietly answers three questions. Is this a real local business? Will a human pick up? Do they handle my problem? If the page around your number answers none of them, plenty of people close the tab and call a company whose page does.

Fix it by putting proof within sight of the number:

None of this is decoration. It is the difference between a number and a number worth calling.

Do my hours matter if the number is right there?

More than almost anything else on the page. A visitor at 9pm who sees no hours has to guess whether calling is pointless. Many guess pointless, plan to call tomorrow, and forget. Or they keep searching until someone answers tonight.

So post hours beside the number, everywhere the number appears. If you answer after hours, say so, it is a genuine edge. If you do not, tell evening visitors exactly what happens next: 'After hours? Leave a message and we call back before 9am.' A promise like that keeps a lead alive overnight instead of handing it to whoever picks up.

One more honest note: if calls ring through while you are on a job and go to a generic voicemail, the website has done its part and the drop-off has moved to your phone. A stated callback window helps, and a text option catches people who will not leave voicemails. If your work runs on scheduled appointments, online booking is its own decision, but when the sale is the call itself, the call path comes first.

What should I fix first, tonight?

Do these in order. Each is small, and together they rebuild the path from visit to ring.

If you want a second set of eyes, we built a free grader for exactly this. Paste your site address at /apps/scan/?src=answers and about 60 seconds later you get a letter grade and a list of the money leaks it found, including whatever is standing between your visitors and a phone call. And because we are new and will not pretend otherwise, we ran the grader on our own site and published the embarrassing C- with every fix at /blog/we-graded-ourselves/.

If you would rather hand it off, we fix what the scan finds for $490 flat, done in 72 hours. But most of what this page describes you can do tonight, or send to whoever built your site as a short, specific list. Your visitors are already showing up. Let them reach you.

Questions people also ask

How do I make my phone number clickable on my website?

Ask whoever manages your site to turn the number into a tel link, a one-line change that opens the phone dialer when tapped. Most builders like WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace have a link type called phone or call, so no code is needed. Test it by tapping the number on your own phone: the dialer should open with your number already filled in.

Should I use a call tracking number on my website?

Call tracking shows you which calls came from your site, which is genuinely useful. The common caution is consistency: search engines compare the number on your site with your Google Business Profile, so use a tracking setup that preserves your main number for search engines, a feature most providers offer. If in doubt, keep one real number everywhere.

Does a contact form replace a phone number for a service business?

No. When your sale is a phone call, the form is a backup for people who cannot talk right now, not the main path. Show the number first and keep the form short beneath it. A business that hides its number behind a form loses the callers who are ready to buy this minute.
